The story about the Truck named “Phyllis”
Honoring those that giveback…
The vehicle that is featured on the 20th Anniversary Main Event Logo is owned by Bob and Jill Ayre of Flint, Michigan, a 1953 5 Window Chevy Truck. Bob and Jill are both extremely active with the Back to the Bricks® Organization, as they have attended and worked on every Promo Tour, and have helped at almost all the other events, including Dust ‘em Off, Tune Up Week, and Main Event week. Bob even helped kick off “Hot Rod High” back in the day, which is a project that was highly successful, and we hope to bring it back someday. To honor and thank Bob and Jill for their dedication and hard work, their Little Red Truck “Phyllis” has been chosen to adorn the logo for the 20th Anniversary Main Event!
Here’s a little story about the Truck named “Phyllis”.
Bob had been in search of a 5 window Chevy for almost ten years. Oddly enough, there was a nearly perfect project-truck located in close proximity to his home. He would often drive past it and get out and leave his name and number under the wiper blade. One memorable Sunday morning, while having breakfast with Jill, Bob sat across from the owner, leaned over and asked him if he was interested in selling. He told Bob that a man was supposed to have come by last week to look at it, but he never showed up. Bob asked if he could see it, and he bought it that day!
He arranged to pick it up the next Wednesday, in March of 2004. For the next 2 years, with the help of many friends and family, Bob tore it down and rebuilt it one bolt at a time! “Phyllis” went to her first car show in June of 2006, which was the Sloan Museum Auto Fair. She has had many updates to modernize the drivetrain since that first show.
Bob and Jill DRIVE this truck on the annual Promo Tour each year, and to all other events. It’s a SHOWSTOPPER, but not a trailer princess!
So that name… The Little Red Truck named Phyllis. She got her name from Bob’s Mother, Mary Phyllis. She’s the one that helped Bob get that old truck out of the farm field and bring it home on that first day!
