Honoring the Visionary Behind Buick Motor Company

The David Buick Statue stands as a tribute to innovation, perseverance, and Flint’s central role in the birth of the American automotive industry. Celebrated during Back to the Bricks, this statue honors David Dunbar Buick, the founder of Buick Motor Company and one of the pioneers whose ideas helped shape modern transportation.

Who Was David Buick?

David Dunbar Buick was a Scottish-born inventor and entrepreneur whose curiosity and determination led to the creation of one of America’s most enduring automotive brands. In 1903, he founded the Buick Motor Company in Detroit, Michigan, soon thereafter relocated to Flint, laying the groundwork for what would become the cornerstone of General Motors.

Though Buick himself did not live to see the long-term success of the company that bears his name, his company’s engineering innovations—particularly in overhead-valve engine design—played a critical role in the early growth of the automobile industry.
