Bio of the players

Michael McGowan, Trumpet

  • Michael frequently plays with the Flint Symphony as well as several other orchestras in Southeast Michigan. He teaches trumpet at Wayne State University in Detroit and is Vice President of the Detroit Federation of Musicians.

Ross Turner, Trumpet

  • Ross has served as principal trumpet of the Windsor Symphony orchestra for over thirty years and has toured extensively with many music theater productions. He also teaches at the University of Windsor, is an avid gardener, and enjoys reading history.

Carrie Banfield-Taplin, Horn

  • Carrie grew up in Grand Blanc.  She began playing the horn at age 9 and spent many summers at Interlochen’s National Music Camp.  She earned performance degrees at the University of Michigan and Northwestern University. Carrie’s professional career spans over 40 years.  She enjoys and is grateful for the many opportunities she has had to perform both chamber and orchestral music.  She is a member of the Detroit Opera orchestra and serves as principal horn with the Flint and Warren Symphonies.

Greg Lanzi, Trombone

  • Greg has been the Bass Trombonist of the Flint Symphony since 1991. He also performs with the Ann Arbor Symphony and the First Brass at First Presbyterian of Flint. Greg recently retired from public school teaching in Northville this June. He is an avid runner and plans to run the Crim race finally this year.

Joseph DeMarsh, Tuba

  • Joe has served as principal tuba of the Flint Symphony Orchestra since 1987.  He also plays in the Dodworth Saxhorn Band which uses antique brass instruments and Ann Arbor’s Today’s Brass.  Retired from teaching music at the Ann Arbor Public Schools, he also enjoys fishing and spending time outdoors.
